UNB Saint John Survival Guide

Study Time

Study tips.

  • Re-write constantly.
  • You can’t read EVERY chapter of EVERY book, but some have fantastic summaries.
  • If you don’t go to class, then you’re not going to get it.
  • Recruit the class keeners for your study group.
  • If you are a slacker, you will get kicked out of your study group.
  • When you get to know the profs, you start to know where they test from (notes or textbook, etc.).
  • Set a location to study in and study there on a regular basis.
  • Avoid studying on your bed because you’ll probably fall asleep.
  • You have to be relatively uncomfortable to study (and the study lounges are a great place to be uncomfortable).

Can you study with a hangover?

  • Not at all. It’s a waste of a day.
  • Some arts majors will tell you that as long as you write the test in the same state you were in when you studied it, you’ll be okay (...yeah, right).
  • OR you could study with a clear head and write with a clear head.
  • You lose about 10% for every drink you take that night.
  • Maybe a glass of wine or one beer, sip on it while you read your notes.

Choosing the right classes and profs.

  • Ask people who have taken the profs before.
  • You don’t have to come in first day and stick with that schedule all semester.
  • The first two weeks, go to like a million classes, and find the ones you like.
  • You can switch classes in the first two weeks.
  • Some profs will try to scare you out of their classes the first day. Don’t fall for it. Those classes end up being the best ones.
  • When you find a professor that you like, you’re going to want to go to those classes.
  • They’ll outline their teaching style the first day.

Cramming vs. daily reviews.

  • Cramming is much more stressful than doing it day by day.
  • When you cram it’s in one ear out the other.
  • When you do it daily, you can go back to the prof for clarification on things you don’t quite understand.
  • Some profs do review classes — those are awesome.
  • Cramming IS good right before a test for those little things you can’t quite remember.
  • The best thing is don’t procrastinate.

Getting the most from your prof.

  • Get your name and your face in front of them.
  • Be very close to them.
  • It’s a fine line between brown-noser and class clown.
  • Make us of the office hours if you have questions.
  • Because UNBSJ is a small school, you can get to know your professors.
  • They’re very approachable and you become friends with some of them.
  • You can talk to them about the subject and you understand it better, so you get your money’s worth.
  • Find sensible excuses and mix them up (don’t say your grandmother died three times).
