UNB Saint John Survival Guide

Your Money

Where does your money go?

  • To the university. Every penny.
  • Drinking, video game, New CD, book if I must have a book.
  • Shopping.
  • We all have the cell phone bill.
  • Gas for the car.
  • Set aside money for books because they are expensive.
  • Even though university can be expensive, Renea Sleep is a godsend — she can help you with some financial troubles.

Keeping track of your money at the bar.

  • The two best times of the year at the bar are September and January (when the student loans come in).
  • Don’t bring debit or credit cards to the bar.
  • Take out your money limit beforehand, and leave the cards at home.
  • If you go to the club early, you can get in without paying cover. If you don’t drink that’s a whole night of dancing for free.
  • Always bring extra money for a cab ride.

The best part-time jobs.

  • Bartending.
  • Tutoring or working in the library.
  • After-school programs — you get paid to play.
  • You can have a part time job and maintain a good GPA — you just need good time management skills.
  • There’s all kinds of jobs that go unfilled every year on campus.
  • Campus jobs are a lot more flexible.
  • By working for the school paper or radio, you can get training that gives you all kinds of job experience.
  • The employment office at the student services has a list of all the jobs on campus.

Getting free money.

  • Apply for scholarships every year.
  • It’s in your e-services. Fill out a form and click a button.
  • If you have a decent GPA, you’re getting something.
  • Apply even if you don’t fulfill all the requirements.

Sticking to a budget.

  • Have more than one account — a spending account and a savings account.
  • Punch everything on the debit card, so you can track it on your online banking.
  • Give your money to somebody who can be trusted with it — or hide it.
  • Make sure before you spend money on something, is it important.
  • You don’t get to play around as much as you want to.
  • Set out when all your bills are due, because you can build up some bad credit.
